Name Your Poison

This is an Eastern Black Swallowtail. There are a variety of plants that it will use as host plants including: Queen Anne’s lace, wild parsnip, water cowbane, caraway, celery, dill, parsley, sweet fennel, and even poison hemlock. Interesting, the poison hemlock is what the ancient Greeks used to execute prisoners. Think about it. A tiny caterpillar can munch on a poisonous plant like candy while we would drop down dead if we tried the same thing. This gives new meaning to the expression, “Name your poison.”
